U.S. Special Ops to buy Polish special-built Aircraft?

The M28 Skytruck turboprop manufactured in Poland was among the aircraft offered to the US special forces – the information was officially confirmed by the Lockheed Martin corporation, which owns PZL Mielec.

  • PZL Mielec, owned by Lockheed Martin, has established cooperation with the American company Sierra Nevada Corporation, thanks to which it can offer a specially modified version of the M28 turboprop aircraft, meeting the requirements of the American Special Operations Command in the “Armed Overwatch program,” said Lockheed Martin’s communications director in Europe by John Neilson.
  • We are honored that this special variant, called MC-145B, was selected as one of the five aircraft in the final demonstration phase of this program. We believe that the MC-145B is the most versatile – mission-capable, most efficient in terms of arming and reconnaissance capabilities, and the most durable – two engines – solution for special operations tasks, John Neilson added.

The final presentation of the aircraft to the potential user is to take place in June and July this year.

According to specialized media, five entities submitted bids in the program of support and reconnaissance aircraft “Armed Overwatch” organized by the US special operations command (SOCOM).

The M28 Skytruck is a version of the Soviet An-28 aircraft modified and modernized by PZL Mielec. US Special Forces had already purchased a dozen or so aircraft of this type; most of it was later transferred as equipment surplus, among others Estonia and Kenya. Skytrucki was also purchased by Nepal, Venezuela and Vietnam. It has also obtained certificates in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Colombia, Taiwan and South Africa.
