Poland and Lithuania pledge to build cross-border gas link

Polish and Lithuanian gas grid operators signed a connection agreement on Thursday, pledging to build a cross-border gas link, Polish operator Gaz-System said.

“The construction of the Poland-Lithuania link, one of the most important European projects in the gas field, is an opportunity to break the existing isolation of the Baltic states from the European gas market,” Gaz-System’s CEO Tomasz Stepien said in the statement.

The project involves building a 357 km (225 miles) long pipe in Poland and a 165 km (100 miles) section in Lithuania.

Gaz-System said it is expected to be completed by end of 2021, three years later than originally planned, partly due to the change of route on Polish territory. The investment is valued at 558 million euros.
