The PGE Group and Ørsted have signed an agreement with DNV, which will deal with the certification of individual elements of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, PGE announced. This year, DNV was officially authorized by the Ministry of Infrastructure to certify offshore wind farms.
“The Baltica Offshore Wind Farm is the largest offshore wind project in Poland in terms of generating capacity planned to be installed. This year, we have already finalized the contracting of all elements for the maritime part of the Baltica 2 project, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027. The next stage was the selection of a company to certify the project, including design compliance
and authorization for operation. Cooperation at this stage with a recognized company with experience in certification of offshore wind projects around the world will certainly ensure the safety and reliability of operation of the largest renewable energy project in Poland,” said PGE President Wojciech Dąbrowski, quoted in the release.
“Project certification is important because it enables proper risk management in the project and helps achieve reliable operation. We are glad that the Baltica 2 project, which is of strategic importance for the Polish economy, will be certified by the largest classification society in the world,” added Agata Staniewska, managing director of Ørsted Offshore Poland.
The scope of DNV’s work for Baltica 2 will include providing a design compliance certificate confirming the compliance of the technical designs with international standards for the design of offshore wind farms and their consistency with the construction design and applicable regulations. These are necessary documents required by the provisions specified in the Maritime Safety Act and the so-called Offshore Act. The certification covers turbines, marine transformer stations, foundations, as well as internal and export cables.
DNV is a risk management consultancy and global classification society specializing in the maritime industry. It provides testing, certification and technical consulting services for the energy production chain, including the oil & gas and offshore wind industries. It employs over 700 people in Poland.
Baltica 2 is one of two stages – next to Baltica 3 – of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm. Ørsted and PGE plan to complete the construction of the Baltica 2 stage with a capacity of approximately 1.5 GW by the end of 2027, and the Baltica 3 stage with a capacity of approximately 1 GW by the end of 2029. Investors are still waiting to make the final investment decision (FID). Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 will create the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm with a total capacity of 2.5 GW, providing green energy to almost 4 million households in Poland.
