The Romanian Railway Reform Agency (ARF) has settled the tender for the purchase of 62 electric multiple units (EMUs) for regional railways in three regions: Bucharest, Cluj and Iasi, choosing Pesa’s offer, the company announced. The budget of this tender is approximately PLN 3 billion.
Pesa’s offer was submitted for the supply of vehicles and for the maintenance of all EMUs for a period of 15 years, with the option of extending the maintenance contract for another 15 years. The offer includes the construction of three maintenance centers for all 62 train units.
“Orders of modern electric multiple units for the Romanian Railways are an important step in the implementation of the Pesa 2030+ Strategy in the context of foreign expansion. This is another Three Seas country to which we will deliver our most technologically advanced vehicles and establish local maintenance centers. Increasing Pesa’s presence in this region is also one of the elements of preparations to offer HS class vehicles for lines operated as part of Via Baltica,” commented Krzysztof Zdziarski, president, quoted in the release.
ARF previously informed about the selection of Pesa’s offer in the second procedure – for the purchase of 29 Inter-Regio electric multiple units for the Bucharest region. The budget of this tender is approximately PLN 1.2 billion. The offer includes the delivery of vehicles with maintenance service for a period of 15 years, with the option of extending the maintenance contract for another 15 years. In this tender, Pesa competed with the French company Alstom, which, after announcing the victory of the Bydgoszcz manufacturer, filed an appeal in this case. The procedure for considering this appeal is ongoing, and the final decision in this matter should be made this year, the material recalled.
“Pesa is actively participating and will participate in subsequent tenders organized by Romanian cities for the purchase of trams for Oradea, Bucharest, Ploesti, Iasi, Bucharest, Galati. The above-mentioned projects are part of Pesa’s development strategy for 2030+, both in the area of tram and electric train production,” the company declared.
Pesa’s presence in Romania has been developed since 2012. In May 2023, the manufacturer delivered 17 trams for the city of Craiova, previously it delivered 16 trams for the city of Iasi.
Pesa Bydgoszcz is a Polish manufacturer of rail vehicles, which also deals with modernization, repairs and inspections of rolling stock.
