The pace at which the construction of nuclear power plants in Poland is currently planned is in contrast to what has happened with previous projects. KGHM joined the race for the first installation and signed an agreement with the American company NuScale Power. The first power plant may be operational in eight years.
Companies owned by billionaires Michał Sołowow and Zygmunt Solorz submitted an application to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) for approval to establish a company dealing with the construction of small nuclear power plants last week. They are to be built on the basis of the American GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy technology. But state-owned companies have no intention of giving up their ambitions to private investors.
KGHM signed a consent to conclude a tripartite agreement with the American company NuScale Power LLC and the Polish company PBE Molecule (consulting company) regarding the preparation for the implementation of an investment consisting in the construction of nuclear energy sources.
It has been added that the agreement will remain in force until September 23, 2024. Importantly, the company also announced that it plans to implement the project by 2030, but the first nuclear reactor will start operating in 2029. This is interesting information because so far it has been talked about the years 2030/2031. The KGHM power plant would therefore be the first in Poland if the plans were realized.
