BLIK classified by NBP as a major retail payment system

BLIK has been classified by the National Bank of Poland (NBP) in the category of “significant retail payment systems”, according to the Polish Payment Standard (PSP) – the operator of BLIK. In 2022, the share of BLIK in the total number of payment orders executed in retail payment systems reached 29%.

“The decision of the National Bank of Poland is proof of the key role BLIK plays in the Polish payment system. The stability and security of BLIK are of paramount importance to the Polish Payment Standard on the way of its continuous development. The fact that BLIK has achieved such a status in the classification and is a systemically important solution gives us grounds to strengthen its presence also outside the country,” said PSP president Dariusz Mazurkiewicz, quoted in the release.

At the end of 2022, the solution was used by nearly 13 million users who performed over 1.2 billion operations, worth PLN 163.9 billion. BLIK is most often used in e-commerce – last year it was used in this channel as many as 714.2 million times. Over the twelve months of last year, the number of BLIK mobile transfers and payments at POS also grew strongly – in 2022, an increase of 110% and 162% year-on-year was recorded in these channels, respectively.

As a result, BLIK significantly increased its share in the retail payments market in Poland. At the end of 2022, it was already 29%, i.e. 7 percentage points more than in the previous year. more than a year earlier. As a result – according to the classification adopted by the National Bank of Poland – it was included in the group of “significant retail payment systems”. According to the NBP policy, this category includes systems whose share in the number of all payment orders executed in retail payment systems in a given currency is at least 25%. In practice, this means, among others, that the analysis of reports submitted by the Polish Payment Standard to NBP will be conducted taking into account the greater importance of the BLIK system for the entire payment infrastructure in Poland, and thus – also for the stability of the Polish financial system.

BLIK is a common standard for mobile payments. Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) is responsible for the development of the system. Its shareholders are: Alior Bank, Bank Millennium, Santander Bank Polska, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, PKO Bank Polski and Mastercard.
