Orlen Unipetrol begins the production of plastics with the use of cooking oils

Orlen Unipetrol - a company from the PKN Orlen Group - obtained a certification enabling petrochemical production with the use of hydrogenated vegetable oils (HVO), PKN Orlen reported. Parallel to the commencement of HVO processing in the Czech Republic, the Orlen Group is developing a technology for the hydrogenation of used cooking oils at the Płock refinery.

"Sustainable investments in the petrochemical segment are a key element of Orlen2030's strategy, bringing the company closer to achieving emission neutrality. We support the development of the circular economy through further investments in the production of biomaterials and the use of recycled materials. By 2030, the Orlen Group will achieve recycling capacities - primarily of plastics - of up to 0.4 million tonnes, ”said Tomasz Wiatrak, President of Orlen Unipetrol, quoted in the press release.

Orlen Unipetrol is a 100% subsidiary of PKN Orlen. It manages two Czech refineries in Litvinov and Kralupy. In 2021, the company processed 7.12 million tonnes of crude oil.

The PKN Orlen Group manages six refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, and is also active in Poland and Canada. Its consolidated sales revenues reached PLN 131.5 billion in 2021. The company has been listed on the WSE since 1999.
