Japanese Kuraray to invest $45 million in MonoSol production facility

Japanese company Kuraray has announced plans to establish a new MonoSol production facility in Poland for manufacturing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) water-soluble films.

According to the company, the demand for PVA water-soluble films is expanding across the world for use as packaging for unit dose detergents, cosmetics, foods, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and more. The market is also expected to continue expanding in the future.

Kuraray said it has now decided to establish a new production base in Poland in order to meet this rising demand, optimise its global supply chain and expand sales in Europe.
MonoSol, the company’s subsidiary in Indiana, the US, manufactures and markets PVA water-soluble films, with production bases located across the US Midwest.

Furthermore, the company plans to expand its supply system and maintain its focus on improving product quality and developing new products.

This will ensure the company’s ability to meet diversifying customer needs as a supplier of PVA water-soluble films.

The new facility, which will be built with an investment of JPY5bn ($45.53m) in Zimna Wodka, is expected to start in the middle of 2022.

The PVA films, which dissolve completely upon contact with water, are biodegradable, meaning they will not contaminate the recycling stream.

Last March, US packaging company Sealed Air and Kuraray America collaborated for a project to manufacture plant-based food packaging.
