ex-Tesla chief leads Northvolt’s expansion in Gdańsk, will hire 500

Co-founder Peter Carlsson said they’ll build a modern production plant in Gdańsk and R&D center for battery modules and energy storage systems.

Northvolt announced its investment plans in Gdansk in February. In 2022, the Swedish company will build a modern production plant in Gdańsk and R&D center for battery modules and energy storage systems. The investment will amount to USD 200 million, i.e. almost PLN 750 million. The Northvolt plant will be located in the Pomeranian Investment Center near the Port of Gdansk and the DCT container terminal.

“We currently employ almost 150 people in Gdańsk, but we plan to employ 500 people in 18 months,” announced the president of Northvolt.

The Mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, emphasized that it is crucial for the city to attract investors offering various jobs. “Northvolt will also create a research and development center that will employ specialists,” she added.

Carlsson in 2011-2015 headed the department responsible for organizing the procurement and supply chain for the production of Tesla cars. He was also a close associate of Elon Musk. The construction of the Northvolt battery cell manufacturing plant in Skelleftea, northern Sweden, was announced in 2017 and is currently under construction. The company received financing for the implementation of investments, among others from sources such as: Vestas, Siemens, ABB, BMW, Scania as well as loans from EIB or an investment with Goldman Sachs worth more than EUR 1 billion.
