Westinghouse gears up for Polish nuclear power plant start in 2024

The Westinghouse concern predicts that more than half of the value of the block with the AP1000 reactor may come from Poland. According to the company, in order to meet the schedule of the Polish nuclear program, works on the site of the future Polish power plant should start in 2028. However, the first works should start as early as 2024, including the construction of test modules for the AP1000 reactor by Polish producers.

“We predict that more than half of the value of each nuclear block may come from Poland, taking into account materials, work, production and services” – Joel Eacker, vice president of the new projects division at Westinghouse, told PAP. As he added, this ratio may reach 60-70 percent.

The company, together with the American government, will submit an offer to the Polish government for the construction of nuclear power plants under the Polish Nuclear Power Program (PPEJ). It predicts that the first reactor is to be launched in 2033.

If our technology is chosen, then in order to meet Polish expectations of the commissioning of the first unit in 2033, in 2028 we should start serious works on the spot – emphasized Eacker.

At the same time, he noted that – if Westinghouse’s offer is chosen – the first works should start as early as 2024, for example, the construction of trial modules for AP1000 by Polish manufacturers. The reactor has a modular structure, he reminded.
