Luxmed acquisition of Lecznice Citomed in Torun challenged by competition authorities

The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) raised objections to Lux Med taking over the company Lecznice Citomed from Toruń. According to them, the transaction may limit competition on the local markets of private medical services and imaging diagnostics in Toruń and its vicinity.

“The participants of the concentration are close competitors to each other. Our analyzes show that the planned concentration may strengthen Lux Med’s position on the local markets of private medical services and imaging diagnostics in Toruń and its vicinity. The second largest competitors on each of these markets are Lux Med would have much lower shares than the entity created as a result of the concentration. Thanks to such a strong position, competitors could be eliminated from the market in the future, which for consumers could mean no choice of other facilities, higher prices for examinations or a doctor’s visit, as well as lower quality services provided “- said the President of UOKiK Tomasz Chróstny.

The subject of the concentration is the acquisition of control by Lux Med over the company Lecznice Citomed from Toruń. Both entrepreneurs operate in the healthcare industry – they provide public and commercial services. Lux Med has various medical facilities throughout Poland, and the Lecznice Citomed company has 5 clinics and a hospital in Toruń.

According to the regulations, entrepreneurs have 14 days to respond to the reservations. This time limit may be extended at their request for a further two weeks.
